Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it so far; why you chose it; what you are (or aren’t) enjoying about it.

I am currently reading Live and Let Die by Ian Fleming. It is quite good so far and is nothing like the film of the same name starring Roger Moore. I am reading it as part of my James Bond reading challenge this year. I find that James Bond is more likable in this book than he is in the first Bond novel and that is a reason why I am enjoying this book so far but it can be a bit too much in its portrayal of its black characters.

I’ve never read an Ian Fleming

Interesting. Having only ever read Thunderball of the original novels – and that about 25 years ago – I’ve just started from scratch. They’re very much products of their time, aren’t they, both in terms of the portrayal of Bond and other characters. I haven’t started L&LD yet, but I was quite surprised by how much of Casino Royale was used in the Daniel Craig film version. It’s certainly a very different Bond to the sanitised and slightly camp version of the Roger Moore years!
They really are products of their time I agree and are very different from the films in many ways. They do seem to be about expensive food, expensive cars and expensive women.
